Wood
Wood draws from the origins of the business in High Wycombe, where beech forests supported a global centre of chair making. It is composed of spice-led top notes over cedar, timber and a base of mahogany and amber. This reads as a translation of workshop atmosphere rather than a generic “woody” profile. It is less about forest freshness and more about worked timber: dried, cut and assembled.
Leather
Leather is more specific in its reference. Fleming Howland’s long-standing expertise in hand-colouring leather is a controlled, multi-stage process that builds depth through successive applications. The scent follows a similar logic. Cinnamon and nutmeg introduce warmth, but it is the pairing of leather with labdanum, grounded by birch and vetiver, that creates the density associated with finished hides rather than raw material. The result is closer to a polished interior than a tannery.
Velvet
Velvet addresses how light interacts with surface. In upholstery, velvet and mohair are selected not only for softness but for their ability to shift tone across a form. The fragrance mirrors this behaviour. Bright plum sits against clove and fenugreek before moving into cedar, leather and a base of sandalwood and vetiver. The effect is deliberately textural, with contrast built into the composition rather than added as an afterthought.

All three candles are engineered to a consistent performance standard, with a burn time of approximately 60 hours (300g candle size). More importantly, they maintain a clear link between scent structure and material knowledge. This is what distinguishes the collection; a direct translation of furniture-making principles into fragrance.
ORDER A CANDLE
The wax formulation is developed with similar precision. The blend is tuned for fragrance load, thermal stability and controlled diffusion. A high concentration of fragrance oil is suspended within a refined wax matrix designed to deliver both immediate throw and sustained performance over the full burn cycle. Wick calibration is matched to vessel geometry to ensure an even melt pool, minimising tunnelling and maintaining consistent scent release. The result is a candle that performs predictably, with intensity and clarity that remain stable from first burn through to the final millimetres.
The vessels are produced in fine bone china in Stoke-on-Trent, a region synonymous with British ceramic manufacturing since the 18th century. The material itself is chosen for its density, translucency and heat tolerance, allowing it to function both as a refined object and a technically suitable container. Bone ash content strengthens the structure while retaining a delicate appearance, and the firing process is controlled to achieve a smooth, consistent finish. This approach aligns closely with Fleming Howland’s own philosophy; traditional methods applied with discipline, where material integrity and long-term performance take precedence over surface effect.
